Maker Spaces

  • Maker Spaces are used in the media center at South Penn to create opportunities for students to collaborate and engage in STEM and problem solving activities. Students work with their peers to make real-world connections and solve authentic problems. There are a variety of maker spaces offered to students, including Ozobots, Osmo, Cublets, K'Nex and legos. Students learn computer coding skills as well as general communication skills that help to promote student success in the digital age.

Raising a Reader Parent Workshops

  • Raising a Reader parent workshops are held for parents of pre-kindergarten students in the full-day program. Parents learn strategies for reading at home with their child. Such strategies may include taking a picture walk through the book prior to reading and making predictions is one example. Parents are given the opportunity to practice the newly introduced strategies with their child in the classroom.  South Penn's Raising a Reader program promotes literacy through rotating high quality children's books sent home weekly to Pre-K students, engaging parents through activities to support and encourage reading at home, and making connections to the local library for encouragement of summer reading. One of the program's goals is to develop and nurture a love of reading for our littlest learners and their families.
