On February 26, 2019, the Maryland State Board of Education approved the school system's waiver request to reclaim April 22, 2019, the Monday after Easter, as a inclement weather make-up day. This day will now be a 3-HOUR DELAYED opening for students. To date, the last day of school for students is June 13, 2019
Children who will enter public school for the first time in August should be registered on April 4 and 5, 2019, at the appropriate home elementary school as determined by residence.
A request for an out-of-district permit may be submitted to the Student Services Department at the Central office or the student’s home elementary school office. This request form may be obtained at school offices or accessed on the district website. School personnel will forward copies of completed requests to the Student Services Department.
A child entering the pre-kindergarten program must be four years old on or before September 1st of the school year in which they apply for entrance; a child entering the kindergarten program must be five years old on or before September 1st of the school year in which they apply for entrance; and a child entering first grade must be six years old on or before September 1st of the school year in which they apply for entrance.
Parents should take their child’s birth certificate, immunization record, social security card, and physical exam (if completed) to the school upon registration. Regulations from the Maryland State Department of Education now require parents enrolling their children in Allegany County Public Schools to show proof of residency, such as a rental lease, a current utility bill showing the physical address, or a notarized statement if living in another household. A copy must be placed in the student’s cumulative file.
Any child entering a Maryland public school for the first time must have a physical examination completed either nine months prior to entering school or six months after entering school. The Board of Education and the local health department also place a great deal of emphasis on kindergarten and first grade students having dental exams prior to entering school. These exams may be conducted by a private physician or at clinics held by the Allegany County Health Department.
The law requires a parent to present to school officials an immunization record verifying that each child entering public school for the first time has had all of his or her required shots. Immunizations may be obtained from a child’s private physician or from the Health Department. Clinics are held every Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. For more information on these clinics call 301-759-5082. Students who have not furnished evidence of immunizations will not be admitted to school.
Parents may call the Board of Education’s Student Services Office at 301-759-2001 or the Elementary Education Office at 301-759-2012 for more information on student registration.
