The Maryland Teacher of the Year program has a single objective: to draw public attention to the work being done by the State's many fine teachers. The Maryland Teacher of the Year will represent thousands of excellent teachers in the public school system. Anyone can nominate a teacher for this honor - students, parents, colleagues, or supervisors. Local Teachers of the Year will become candidates for the Maryland Teacher of the Year. All will be honored at a meeting of the State Board of Education. Seven state semi-finalists will be invited to a reception in the fall, at which time the Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced. This individual will receive a personal cash award of $4,000.
Maryland's choice will be a candidate for National Teacher of the Year. In the past, the national winner has been feted in a round of press and network television interviews, meetings with members of Congress, and a ceremony at the Oval Office with the President. The National Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the National Council of Chief State School Officers, Good Housekeeping Magazine, and Encyclopedia Britannica. The Maryland Teacher of the Year program is sponsored by the State Department of Education and the Maryland Chamber Foundation.
