5th Grade Outdoor School Begins
September 8 - October 15
Western MD 4H Center in Swanton Md
All ACPS 5th graders participate in outdoor school at the 4H camp in Garrett County. Each elementary school for one week. Multiple elementary schools are scheduled for each week. It takes 6 weeks for all to attend and experience the program.
Patriot Day
September 11
On September 11, Allegany County Public Schools joins communities across the nation in remembering those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks. We also honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders, service members, and individuals who came together to help others.
Grandparents Week
September 14-18
Let’s celebrate the grandparents who make life a little brighter! This week, we recognize the love, wisdom, encouragement, and countless special memories that grandparents share with our students. Thank you for being some of our students’ biggest fans!

Adaline Carder, student member of the Allegany County Board of Education, attended her first “official” meeting last night. We’re excited to have this dynamic Fort Hill student on the board.
Adaline met with Kara Kennell and Superintendent Martirano this summer.

Today's International Literacy Day. Did you know that being a strong reader by the end of Grade 3 can lead to future success in high school? That's pretty powerful! 📚 📖
Here are 10 tips for reading with your favorite young person:
1. Attend our Raising a Reader events and Literacy Nights.
2. Read with your child every day, even if it’s a short time.
3. Keep a children’s book with you for down time.
4. Visit your local library with your child.
5. Borrow or trade books with other families.
6. Don’t be afraid to get silly while reading.
7. Keep reading over fall, winter, spring and summer breaks.
8. Work with your child’s teacher to support your reader.
9. Know that you’re helping: when kids learn to read, they read to learn.
10. Make up stories together and draw pictures.
