Next Generation Scholars (NGS) is a state grant program established by Maryland House Bill 1403 (2016) that provides funding for college access through nonprofit organizations to enhance college and career awareness and college completion for low-income Maryland high school students. The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) has been awarded five grants by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to work in Allegany, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent and Wicomico counties.
In Allegany County, MBRT’s implementation is designed to offer essential college and career-ready services to students who currently qualify for the Maryland Guaranteed Access Grant at Fort Hill High School. MBRT services will support qualifying students by helping: to determine career interests; creating awareness of how high school preparation, college coursework completion and career goals connect; offering exposure to career pathways through workforce volunteer learning engagements; and preparing students for college and career through interviewing and job shadowing opportunities.
