A Brief History of Braddock . . .
During the year of 1960, the Allegany County Board of Education decided that two junior high schools were needed- one for seventh and eighth graders attending Allegany High School, and one for seventh and eighth graders attending Fort Hill High School. Our school would be named after General Edward Braddock, a British general from the French and Indian War.The construction of Braddock Junior High began in 1963, when about 33 acres of land were donated by the county for Braddock to be built on. Braddock Junior High was completed in the fall of 1965, with the total cost nearing 2.5 million dollars. It was built to hold 900 students, and in the opening year, 1965, over 700 were enrolled. Our school has had six principals so far. Our first principal, Mr. Robert M. Hutcheson, chose blue and gray as our school colors. In that same year, our school motto, “Progress Is The Spirit of Braddock” was chosen by the Student Council, along with the school song, “Hail to Braddock High”. The other principals who have served Braddock are Mr. Joseph P. Martirano (1966-1979), Mr. Joseph V. Carter (1979-1993), Dr. Frederick Sloan (1993-1994), Mr. O. Thomas Harman (1994-2002), and Mr. Danny R. Carter (2002-present).Many changes have been made to Braddock over the years, including the time in 1984 when the name Braddock Junior High was changed to Braddock Middle School and a sixth grade was added, and in the 2010-2011 school year when we adopted the “block” schedule.
