ACPS, ACM, FSU, BW Participate in Leadership Allegany! Education Day

LA panel This Year’s Theme “Ensuring Student Success in a Changing World”


On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Allegany! Class of 2019 participated in the program’s annual Education Day co-hosted by the Allegany County Public Schools, Allegany College of Maryland, Frostburg State University, and Bishop Walsh School. The day’s theme was “Ensuring Student Success in a Changing World.”


The class began their day at Allegany College of Maryland, where ACM president, Dr. Cynthia Bambara, welcomed them. Class members heard updates from a number of individuals who highlighted how ACM is ensuring student success in a changing world through business partnerships. Presenters included Dr. Stephen Jones, former CEO; Mr. Jeff Kirk, Dean of CE and Workforce Development; Mrs. Autumn Becker, Director of WMD IT Center for Excellence; Mrs. Kathy Condor, Director of Health and Human Services; Ms. Melanie Chapman, Director of Adult Basic Education; Mr. Bill Rocks, Dean of Career Education; Mr. Chandler Sagal, Grants and Development Associate; Mrs. Cheryl Nelson, Director of the Nurse-Managed Wellness Clinic/Associate Professor of Nursing; and Mr. Rick Cooper, Director of Nursing.


The group’s next stop was the Center for Career and Technical Education, where they heard from a panel of ACPS faculty, staff and students about a variety of the school system’s active and innovate learning opportunities. CCTE principal, Mr. Richard King, welcomed the class, and then they were treated to a brief highlights video followed by a panel discussion. Topics included Active Learning Labs, the Chinese Partial Immersion program, PTECH, the Apprenticeship Maryland program, new AG science electives, and more. Panel members included Dr. Kim Kalbaugh, Chief Academic Officed; Mrs. Tammy Fraley, elected school board member; Dr. George Brown, Supervisor of Professional Learning, New Teacher Induction and Secondary Social Studies; Ms. Melissa Kaye, PTECH Coordinator; Dr. Molly Stewart, principal at Braddock Middle School; Mrs. Heather Morgan, principal at John Humbird Elementary School; Mrs. Breann D’Atri, Coordinator of Apprenticeship and Workforce Development; and students Lindsay Sites and Hannah Greely. Prior to departing the Career Center, the class was treated to lunch in the school’s culinary arts café.


After lunch, Leadership Allegany’s! Education Day continued with a visit to Bishop Walsh School. While there, the group got a private school perspective of ensuring student success in a changing world. Presenters included Dr. Ray Kiddy, principal; Ms. Jen Flinn, Dean of Students; Mr. Jim Zamagais, Dean of Academics; and Mrs. Susan Cioni, Guidance Counselor. A panel of BW graduates also had the opportunity to discuss their experiences at the school.


Finally, after departing from BW, Leadership Allegany’s! Education Day continued with a visit to Frostburg State University to hear welcoming remarks from president, Dr. Ronald Nowaczyk, and Dr. Jeff Graham, Interim Vice President for Student Affairs. The group then had the opportunity to hear presentations from Dr. Michael Flinn, Associate Professor of Computer Science and IT, on preparing students for careers in the computing sciences; and Jill Buterbaugh, CRNP/Assistant Professor of Nursing, and Audra Houser, CRNP/Assistant Professor of Nursing, about the university’s Advanced Practice Nursing course.
