Art in the Schoolyard: Mount Savage Elementary

art work     Mount Savage Elementary 3rd grade students had an exciting opportunity provided by the Evergreen Heritage  Center, to merge science and art.  Students were rotated in groups through two different sites.  One site was a  mowed lawn and the other was a high grass area.  The students were asked to compare plant and animal diversity in those areas.  Students focused on surveying the areas for insects and other small creatures using magnifiers.  They then discussed habitats and compared their site findings.

Students were able to bring a favorite small item from this activity back to the art classroom.  The students then examined the small items and created enlarged artworks.  Their selected item was drawn onto larger paper in pencil.  They used crayons for shading and mixed colors to finish their paintings.
