Braddock Mathcounts Team Wins 8th Straight Chapter Championship

On Saturday, February 29, 2020, the Braddock Middle School Mathcounts team advanced to the Maryland State Finals with its 8th straight chapter championship.  Placing second at the chapter event was Mt. Savage Middle School.
 
Nine middle schools and nearly 100 mathletes from Allegany and Washington Counties competed for the opportunity to move on to Johns Hopkins University on March 14th for the state finals. Unfortunately, with the closure of Johns Hopkins University due to the coronavirus situation, the state Mathcounts competition had been postponed indefinitely. 
 
Braddock's team members include Colin Sheehe, who has had the highest score in the event for each of the last 3 years; Emmanuel Kujenga, who was third overall; Sam Wu, and Nathan Peterson.  Braddock also advanced four additional individuals - Nikola Litten, 5th overall; Anna Hilderbrand, 6th overall; Ben McGrew, and Bryce Bridges. 
 
The Mt. Savage state finalist team members include Annabeth Hughes, who was 4th overall; Ella Valentine, Owen Pratt, and Sophia Zhang.  Boonsboro finished 3rd to round out the state team qualifiers. 
 
In the Alternate competition, Braddock swept the top four spots with Corinna Hiderbrand in first. She is a 5th grader taking accelerated 7th grade math at Braddock. Alexis Johnston, Carter Rice, and Kinsey Hostetler placed in the other three top spots.  This was the 37th year for the competition.  Braddock has won 29 chapter championships and advanced to the state finals 31 times.
