Mountain Ridge Students Take the Stage at Disney World

mr disney Marching Band, Choir to Perform during Thanksgiving Break

The Mountain Ridge High School marching band and choir will travel to Orlando, FL, for performances, music, magic, fun, and sun during the upcoming Thanksgiving break. The band will march the Magic Kingdom’s Main Street Parade on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., and the choir will perform in Epcot’s Candlelight Processional. The students will enjoy four days in the Disney theme parks as well as one day at Universal Studios.

The Candlelight Processional, a Disney tradition, is a 50-minute show presenting the Christmas Story. The MRHS high school choir will be among the 300 voices joining the Disney’s Voices of Liberty Choir. In addition, a 50-piece professional orchestra with herald trumpets and a celebrity narrator complete the moving performance. All participating choirs will sing fourteen songs throughout the show at the America Gardens Theatre in Disney’s Epcot. The narrator for this event is Ming-Na Wen, of Agents of Shield, and the new Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, on Disney Plus.

The high school choir underwent a video and audio audition. Disney selected Mountain Ridge’s students to perform for two shows of the Candlelight Processional on Friday, November 29, 2019, at 6:45 p.m. and then again at 8:15 p.m. in the American Gardens Theatre at Epcot. In regards to this invitation to participate, Mrs. Michaela Hale, Director of Choirs at Mountain Ridge, said, “We are so proud that our school has again been given this invitation to share the Story of Christmas with the world.” This is Hale’s sixth student trip to Walt Disney World. The choir will also take part in the Disney Sings! Workshop led by Disney professionals on Thanksgiving Day.

The award-winning Mountain Ridge marching band and color guard were selected by video audition to perform for Disney's Magic Kingdom Parade. The students will join other high school bands as they march from Frontier Land down Main Street, USA, performing for thousands of spectators. Derek Shank, Director of Instrumental Music, noted “I couldn’t be prouder of this opportunity for our student musicians. What a great way to end the marching band season.” Shank is also excited for his second student trip to Walt Disney World.

The instrumental students will participate in a clinic directed by a Walt Disney World professional musician, entitled "You're Instrumental", which gives an inside look on how Disney animated films are recorded.

The Music Department of Mountain Ridge High School has participated in various fundraisers to make this trip a reality and are grateful for the generosity of the local community and the support from the school’s faculty and staff.
