Three Allegany County Public School students have been chosen to perform with the Maryland All State Chorus. Eliza Griffith, senior at Allegany High School, and Laurel Plitnik, senior at Mountain Ridge High School, have both been selected to perform with the Senior Treble Chorus as part of the Maryland Music Educators Conference in Baltimore February 1-3, 2019. Guy Witt, freshmen at Mountain Ridge, has been selected to perform with the Junior All State.

To participate in the Maryland All State activities, a student must be enrolled in a chorus class and pass the audition process. These talented singers were chosen after a rigorous audition in November where they had to prepare an a cappella song and an accompanied piece. Students also had to perform at sight a melodic and rhythmic sight reading. Vocal evaluations are based primarily on vocal quality, accuracy of sung selections, and ability to read and sing accurately on pitch.

At Allegany, Griffith participates in Concert Choir, Drama Club, Marching Band, National Honor Society, Show Choir, Mock Trial and is a Student of the Month for the Rotary Club. She is the choir student of Desiree Witt, and this is her second year in All State Choir.

Plitnik participates in Jazz Band, Drama Club, Senior Choir, Concert Choir, Grace Notes, French Club, National Honor Society, is a Student of the Month for the Rotary Club, and is a member of the tennis team. This is her third year in All State Choir. In addition to Maryland All State, Plitnik has also been chosen to sing in the All Eastern Choir in Pittsburgh that will take place in April.

Third year All State student, Guy Witt, participates in Marching Band, Drama Club, Senior Choir, Men’s Yahoo Group, and the Concert Choir. He is a member of MCCA and has participated in Mountainside Baroque’s Summer Academy for three years. Mountain Ridge Choir students are under the direction of Michaela Hale.

The Maryland All State performances are part of the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA). MMEA is the professional association for the school music teachers of Maryland that provides professional development for music teachers, opportunities for over 26,000 to engage in state-wide music activities and events involving students, teachers, and volunteers, and serves as an advocate for music education in Maryland schools.
