ACPS High School Students Get Lessons in Financial Literacy

Western Maryland Area Credit Unions Host 14th Semi-Annual Reality Fair

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, area credit unions from Allegany County and the Western Maryland Chapter of the MD/DC Credit Union Association (MD/DC CUA) hosted the 14th Semi-Annual Financial Reality Fair for area high school students held at the Cumberland Hot Stove Bingo Hall. This semester, students from Allegany, Fort Hill, and Mountain Ridge High Schools, and Lighthouse Christian Academy had the opportunity to participate in phases of financial decision-making using real-life scenarios.

The Financial Reality Fair is a practical exercise in personal financial management, budgeting, and decision-making. In preparation for the fair, student participants chose an occupation of genuine interest to them and were asked to research the salary range for their career path. From there, the students had to make lifestyle choices in housing, transportation, food and clothing, insurance, entertainment, and other categories within a realistic budget. At the conclusion of their selections at the fair, students met with financial counselors who reviewed their budget results and advised them about potential modifications to promote savings.

“The Reality Fair gives students the opportunity to realize some financial decisions they will have to make in their future,” said Richard (Doc) Daugherty, President of Chessie Federal Credit Union. “The Western Maryland Chapter would like to thank the Board of Education for helping us make this Reality Fair possible for all the students. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their generous donations and for making an investment in our students’ futures.”

Participating Western Maryland credit unions included the ACT 1st FCU, Chessie FCU, Healthcare 1st FCU, Potomac FCU, SECU of Maryland, Inc., and WEPCO FCU. Business sponsors included Chick-Fil-A, Allegany Computer Service, Bill Miller Equipment Sales, Cumberland Hot Stove, Dan Rhodes – Cuna Mutual Group, Mid-Atlantic Corporate FCU, Morgan Keller – Specialty Contract Group, and Terri Lowery – Attorney at Law.

The MD/DC Credit Union Association is the premier regional trade association for credit unions in the state of Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area that serves more than 2.2 million member-owners. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that are locally controlled and owned by the people they serve. For more information, visit www.mddccua.org.

The spring Financial Reality Fair is scheduled for April 3, 2019.
