Three ACPS Students Earn Scholarships to Frostburg State University
Annual Student Salute Program Affords Graduates Money Towards College
Three Allegany County Public School students were recently selected as 2020 recipients of the annual Student Salute Program scholarships. Hana Chitsaz of Mountain Ridge High School will receive a $5,000 one-year scholarship, to be used for tuition, to Frostburg State University for the 2020-2021 academic year. Kole Morgan of Allegany High School and Katherine Baker of Mountain Ridge High School are the recipients of $500 scholarships to FSU for the upcoming year.
The Allegany County Student Salute Program scholarship was founded by WCBC, and the money to pay these scholarship comes from an inkind relationship between WCBC and FSU. The program recognizes high school seniors who excel in the classroom. Through the program, those students identified as exceptional academic achievers, based on GPA, school and community leaders, and who intend to enroll at Frostburg State University, earn the opportunity to qualify for scholarships.
Hana Chitsaz is a member of the Superintendent's Executive Board, the president of the Allegany County Association of Student Councils, the vice president of the National Honor Society, the senior class president, and the musical director of the HRM documentary. She is also a member of student council, the chorus, the concert choir, Grace Notes, and the jazz band. Hana plays the violin at children's hospitals and museums, volunteers her time at the Senior Citizen Prom, as a tutor, and by fundraising for the Miner statue and with the Allegany County's Maryland Census Board. Hana plans to attend Frostburg State University to pursue a career in musical performance and as a mechanical engineer.
Kole Morgan is the captain of the cross-country and track and field teams and is a member of the National Honor Society. He also enjoys scuba diving, playing the piano and the guitar, and working part-time as a lifeguard. Kole volunteers his time with the WMHS and with the Special Olympics. He plans to attend Frostburg State University to major in biology and hopes to pursue a career as a plastic surgeon or an ER physician.
Katherine Baker is the student body secretary, the varsity soccer captain and the captain of both indoor and outdoor track, and a member of the National Honor Society. She is also a head instructor and black belt at Kick Masters Karate and a manager of the Frostburg Pool. Katherine volunteers her time organizing fundraisers for those in need and is very involved with the Holding Hands for Haley Foundation. She plans to attend Frostburg State University and hopes to pursue a career as a prothetist.
The Allegany County Board of Education distributes and collects applications for the Student Salute scholarships, which are converted into "on-air" salutes that run weekly on WCBC radio station. The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce's Education Committee reviews all applications and selects the FSU scholarship recipients.
