ACPS Holds Celebration Recognition for Community School Program

Earlier this month representatives from Allegany County Community Schools gathered with school administrators, senior staff from the Board of Education, and community partners to celebrate the growth of the Community School Program in Allegany County.

The first schools in Allegany County to be identified as community schools were Georges Creek Elementary, South Penn Elementary, John Humbird Elementary, and Westernport Elementary in 2020. The program grew by two schools in 2023, with the addition of West Side Elementary and Westmar Middle School. The program saw the largest growth in 2024, with eight schools being added: Beall Elementary, Braddock Middle School, Cresaptown Elementary School, Center for Career and Technical Education, Mt. Savage Elementary School, North East Elementary School, and Washington Middle School. Three additional schools have been identified for the upcoming 25-26 school year.

During the end-of-year celebration, all 14 coordinators shared three highlights from their school year. The presentation included examples of how they provide healthy food supplements to the many food-insecure families in Allegany County, how they combat chronic absenteeism, as well as noting the numerous community partnerships they’ve built to provide student enrichment opportunities both in and out of the classroom. Coordinators recognized more than 25 community organizations and businesses for their contribution to the implementation of the Community Schools Grant, including faith-based organizations, local farmers, mental health providers, beauty salons, local civic groups, and nonprofits.

“Community Schools are built on the belief that 'it takes a village,” says Lakyn Strietbeck, Community School Coordinator from CCTE. “This year, you’ve proven that time and time again. Because of you, our students had access to enrichment programs, wellness support, real-world learning, and most importantly, a sense that the community believes in them.”
