Fort Hill Student Wins “George Washington Leadership in History” Award
Fort Hill High School student, Carl Eckard, was awarded the “George Washington Leadership in History" prize” at the Maryland National History Day Competition. Carl, under the direction of Fort Hill teacher Kayla Hutson, will receive a prize of $350 presented by the Washington Library of George Washington’s Mount Vernon.
This year’s theme for National History Day was “Breaking Barriers.” The title of Carl's exhibit is Thomas Paine: Breaking Barriers with Pen and Paper, for which he won in the Senior Individual Exhibit category. Thomas Paine’s work publishing materials that could be understood by the common man helped to spark the American Revolution and as a result, connects the ideas and events that defined George Washington’s life.
