zoeZoe Litton, 4th grade student in Dr. Carley McGann’s classroom at Beall Elementary School, was recently chosen as the winner of the “If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest for Allegany and Garrett Counties. The contest, hosted by the Maryland Municipal League, drew more than 2,200 entries from fourth graders throughout the state.

This year's essay topic asked students to “Celebrate the Soul of Maryland” by sharing special facts, develop a slogan to highlight the uniqueness of their town, as well as share ideas they would have to draw visitors to their community if they were Mayor. On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, Zoe visited Annapolis and received a Governor’s Citation and plaque as one of the 11 winners from across the state.

This year marked the 22nd year of the Essay Contest and the first year Beall Elementary has had a winner in contest history.
