Pesticide Use

  • Integrated Pest Management

The Board of Education of Allegany County has adopted Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures for control of structural and landscape pests for school buildings and school grounds. IPM utilizes a variety of methods to control or eliminate pests while minimizing the use of pesticides, which may pose a threat to people or the environment. Such methods may include, but are not limited to monitoring, sanitation, cultural, biological, physical, mechanical, no action, or pesticide application as a last resort.

The contact person maintains the product label and material safety data sheet of each pesticide or bait station, which may be used in any school building or on school grounds. This information is available for review by a parent, guardian, staff member, or student at the subject school and the contact person is available for additional information or comment upon request.

An unanticipated pest problem may arise during the school year that could warrant the use of a pesticide not listed below. In this light, some pesticides that are not listed below may be used, but all required notification and record keeping procedures still apply. Parents, guardians, and staff of middle and secondary schools may request to be included on a Pesticide Notification List to receive prior notice of pesticide applications by contacting the principal of the subject school and making such a request in writing. Parents, guardians, and staff of elementary schools will automatically be notified prior to pesticide applications as required by law. For more information, contact Wally High, Supervisor of Operations, at 301-722-4968, 211 Market Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
