Asbestos Management

Asbestos Management

In October 1987, the U.S. Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). Under this law, comprehensive regulations were developed to address required schools to inspect for friable and non-friable asbestos, develop asbestos management plans, address asbestos hazards in school buildings, and implement response actions in a timely manner. These regulations assign school systems many responsibilities. The Allegany County Board of Education’s program for fulfilling these responsibilities is outlined in the AHERA Management Plan. The plan contains information on the school’s inspection results, re-inspection, and related material to meet the requirements of AHERA. The AHERA Management Plan for each school can be viewed at individual schools during normal school hours. The plan will also be available at the office of the Asbestos Coordinator for review. If you have any questions, please contact William Marley, Asbestos Coordinator, at 301-759-2830.
