The Allegany County Public School system strives to provide quality early learning experiences for young children. ACPS hopes to develop in children a sense of competence and positive feelings toward learning in order to establish a basis for life-long learning.  The Pre-k Program provides a wide range of experiences, including a mix of teacher-directed instructional activities and child-centered self-exploration. We partner with several community organizations and other ACPS programs to provide effective early childhood classrooms, including the Judy Centers, Birth to Five Department, Office of Head Start, and through the Maryland State Prekindergarten Program - Blueprint, our partner private provider, Roots Learning Center.  Full-day pre-k classrooms for 4-year-olds exist in every elementary school and half-day programs for 3-year-olds are housed in regional sites.

The Prekindergarten program incorporates the domains of learning to guide daily instruction. Integration of the Maryland Early Learning Standards and Maryland’s College and Career Readiness Standards into lessons and activities provides a content-rich curriculum.  Research-based curricular resources incorporated with engaging instructional activities provides the foundation for building confident, skilled early learners.
Domains include:
Language and Literacy
Mathematics
Social Foundations
Science
Social Studies
Fine Arts
Physical Well-Being and Motor Development
Currently, the prekindergarten programs utilize the Frog Street program to guide academic instructional activities and social emotional learning.  The program incorporates daily conscious discipline activities to promote students’ awareness of self, acceptance of others, and nurturing relationships.
